Workers in Kaduna state today staged a protest over the planned sack of 21, 000 teachers by the state government. Recall that the governor Nasir El-Rufai-led government conducted a competency test of school teachers in the state last month and as much as 21, 000 of them failed the primary-four questions set in the competency test. The protesting workers led by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, stormed the state Assembly in Zaria, the state capital where they destroyed cars and sliding doors. The workers are demanding that the government should rescind its decision or have the entire labor force to contend with. They argue that the state government has no constitutional powers to organize such examination for teachers, saying only the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria has the mandate to do so. The workers have therefore given the state government two weeks to cancel the planned dismissal of teachers, or they will embark on an indefinite strik

The bodies of the women were brought to the southern Italian port of Salerno by the Spanish ship Cantabria on Sunday, and prosecutors opened an investigation over suspicions that the women, some as young as 14, may have been abused and killed. The bodies were recovered by Cantabria, which works as part of the EU’s Sophia anti-trafficking operation, from two separate shipwrecks – 23 from one and three from the other. 53 people are believed to be missing. The men arrested have been named as Al Mabrouc Wisam Harar, from Libya, and Egyptian Mohamed Ali Al Bouzid. The pair are believed to have skippered one of the boats. They were identified by survivors who were among the 375 brought to Salerno by Cantabria. An autopsy on the bodies should be completed over the next week. Chilling footage obtained by Al Arabiya TV shows the passengers boarding the aircraft shortly before it went down and disappeared from radar. Everyone on board - including senior government officials and a mayor - died in the crash reported by local media . They were reportedly taking a helicopter tour of development projects near the coast. The cause of the crash has not been revealed. It occurred a day after 11 princes, four ministers and tens of former ministers were arrested in an anti-corruption purge launched by Saudi Arabia's future king, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. A police commissioner at the scene confirmed that at least 27 people had died. Several others are reported to be injured. The San Antonio FBI branch said its agents had been deployed, and there was no indication of the gunman's motive. The FBI also said that while only one shooter was reported, it was looking into other possibilities. Local ABC affiliate KSAT 12 reported the gunman entered the church at around 11:30 local time (17:30 GMT). It also said he had been killed in the aftermath.

A 53-year-old dad Wendell Melton shot and killed his 14-year-old son Giovanni over his  sexual orientation. "Giovanni was abused physically and mentally and spiritually for many, many years," said Sonja Jones, Giovanni's former foster mom. Over the phone, Jones spoke of the teen she loved as one of her own. . Jones says she was told by another family member that part of the argument that led to the deadly shooting was over Giovanni's sexual orientation. Jones says Wendell Melton had problems with it. .
