Three siblings trading in beans on Adenekan Street, Alagbado, Lagos State, have been arrested by the police for allegedly selling “poisonous beans” to members of the public. The absence of a Magistrate Alatuwo Fubara of the Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt on Thursday stalled the hearing on bail application for journalist and blogger, Kemi Olunloyo, and Port Harcourt-based publisher, Samuel Walson. Olunloyo and Walson were arrested for purportedly publishing materials believed to have defamed a frontline cleric, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, of the Salvation Ministries in Port Harcourt. Though they were expected to appear in court on Thursday morning, it was gathered that the absence of Fubara, who was expected to preside over the matter, forced them to stay back in prison custody. The magistrate was said to have been unable to come to the court due to ill health. The duo’s lawyers and counsel for Salvation Ministries were present at court. Speaking with newsmen, Counsels to the two journalists, Fibi Fawehimi and Eugene Maeba said there was a plot to gag the media. Britain joined the United States on Tuesday in banning passengers traveling from airports in several Muslim-majority countries from bringing laptops, tablets and other portable electronic devices on board with them when they fly. The U.K. ban applies to six countries, while the U.S. ban applies to 10 airports in eight Muslim-majority countries. Fliers can still travel with these items, but they must be packed in their checked baggage on U.S.- and U.K.-bound flights from airports across the countries, including busy transit hubs in Istanbul, Dubai and Doha, Qatar. The British ban also includes some cellphones and is expected to apply to all airports in the six nations. According to PM News,  the government also warned religious houses to procure sound proof in order to minimize the effect of noise pollution. General Manager‎, Lagos State Environment Protection Agency, LASEPA, Adebola Shabi said the decision on noise pollution came as a result of the increasing rate of petitions by residents, who were lamenting the frequent disturbance from the beer parlours, clubs and religious houses. On procurement of sound proof for churches, mosques, beer parlour and restaurants, Shabi added: “Any new church to be built must come and get a sign-off from the agency, the old one should start putting sound proof now. It must be acoustic .” While harping on the ban of live band at bars and other places, the LASEPA boss warned “Any complaint from the residents henceforth, there will be sanction. They must obtain permit to do so and failure to obtain permit, the fine is N500, 000. We must discourage needless noise making at our residences.”

Former Delta State governor, James OnanefeIbori, has filed an appeal in the British Court of Appeal against his 2012 conviction. . A statement by Ibori’s Media Assistant, Tony Eluemunor, yesterday said Ibori’s counsel informed the Southwark London court on Friday March 17, 2017, that they have filed the appeal on Ibori’s behalf. The statement said “the court then indefinitely adjourned the on-going proceedings concerning the second confiscation hearing.” .
