18-day-old baby died of herpes
A United States couple has been heartbroken after losing their 18-day-old baby girl to herpes.
The baby, Mariana had contacted the disease when a friend of the couple who had cold sore kissed her.
Nicole and Shane Sifrit, according to The Sun, had just exchanged vows with their six-day-old daughter in attendance when the newlyweds discovered two hours later that she had stopped eating and was slow to wake up.
It was when they rushed her to the hospital that they discovered she had the herpes infection.
The infection made Mariana’s kidneys, liver stop functioning properly, causing internal bleeding, even after multiple blood transfusions.
The couple are now hoping to raise awareness of how dangerous herpes can be for infants.
"Keep your babies isolated, don’t let just anyone come visit them, and make sure they are constantly washing their hands," the Sifrits warn.
"Don’t let people kiss your baby, and make sure they ask before they pick up your baby."
Neonatal herpes is said to be a herpes infection in a newborn baby.
It's caused by the highly contagious herpes simplex virus, which causes cold sores and genital ulcers in adults.
Neonatal herpes, sometimes, only affects a baby's eyes, mouth or skin. Most babies with this type of infection will recover with antiviral treatment but the infection is considered more dangerous once it spreads to a baby's organs.
