Edo State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, insisted that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration must account for the missing 4,781 bags of rice of the 6,822 approved for the Internally Displaced Persons Camp at Uhogwa in Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state by the Federal Government. Edo State chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih while receiving defectors from All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA and Freedom Foundation Movement, FFM, into the party, described the rice scandal as unbelievable, insisting that the governor must account for the missing bags of rice. Mrs Maureen Zubie-Okolo, a Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist with UNICEF, has said, adding that the water and sanitation situation in the country was worrisome. She said although 64.1 percent of Nigerians had access to improved drinking water sources, North-East states were, however, lagging behind with 52.4 per cent, while South-West states top the chart with 87.3 per cent of its residents having access to improved water sources. “About two out of every three households use improved water sources, while a little more than one-third use improved sanitation compared to 58.5 percent and 31 per cent respectively in 2011. According to the report, overwhelming majority representing 90.8 per cent of households in Nigeria, drink water contaminated by faeces and other impure substances like Ecoli. Zubie-Okolo said there was the need for more advocacy to all tiers of government to make policies and programmes that would increase access to improved water sources and sanitation. ...

An operational vehicle belonging to the Lagos State Environmental and Sanitation Corp s kills apprentice, passerby after task force raid in Mushin, Lagos The victims were a 17-year-old apprentice hairdresser identified only as Medinat, and a female passerby. Lagos State Police Command has arrested a fake lawyer, Barrister Chris Elisha, who has been practising law for 15 years. He was nabbed at Ojo Magistrate Court, where he appeared for an accused . The spokesman of the command, SP Chike Oti, told newsmen that the suspect was arrested on Tuesday at Ojo Magistrate’s Court while representing a client. Oti said that the fake lawyer, who identified himself as Barrister Chris Elisha, claimed he had been practicing as a lawyer illegally for the past 15 years without being spotted. Nemesis caught up with him on 6th of February, at Ojo Magistrates’ Court where he appeared on behalf of an accused person but found it difficult to move a motion for the variation of the bail condition of his client. Justice Yusuf Haliru of the Federal high court Abuja today struck out a fresh bail application filed by Maryam Sanda, the pregnant mother of a six month old baby who stabbed her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, to death at their home in Abuja in November last year. Maryam's counsel, Daudu Joseph today told the court to grant her bail because of her pregnancy and the fact that she needed to take care of her 6-month-old baby. My lord, the new fact is that she is three months pregnant and I have done my research,” Daudu told the court. However, the prosecuting counsel, James Idachaba, asked the court to reject the application on grounds that it constituted an abuse of court of process. Halilu ruled in favour of the prosecutor, saying it would amount to toeing “a path of destruction” to grant Sanda bail since the applicant’s notice of appeal against the court was still pending. It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for his (Daudu’s) argument to sway this court....

The deceased, a lawyer from Sagbama Local Government Area and his wife Victoria from Brass Local Government Area and staff of the Bayelsa Arts and Culture, had been cohabiting for years before they decided to legalise their union in 2014, though it was yet to produce children before the unfortunate incident.
