According to a new biography, Obama ever met his wife, Michelle, at her Chicago law firm, the future 44th president of the United States asked another woman to marry him in 1986 — while the two were visiting her parents’ home, a new biography, “Rising Star" claims 
Rising Star, by David J. Garrow, claims Barack Obama dated Sheila Miyoshi Jager before he met Michelle

He proposed to her in 1986 but Jager's parents were concerned that she was too young - Jager was 23 and Obama was 25 - and refused his advances.
Now 53, the associate professor and director of the East Asian program at Oberlin College in Ohio, told Garrow that Obama became 'so very ambitious very suddenly.'
'I remember very clearly when this transformation happened, and I remember very specifically that by 1987, about a year into our relationship, he already had his sights on becoming president.'

Garrow writes that Obama believed he needed to 'fully identify as African American' to fulfill his political ambitions

He believed that having a non-black spouse could damage his prospects, according to the book. She was of Dutch and Japanese ancestry. 
But Obama proposed again before leaving for Harvard Law School, and again was turned down

The future president met his wife-to-be at the university but Garrow claims he kept seeing Jager on-and-off for the first year of their relationship

But they severed their relationship once and for all after the Obamas married.
