Brazil football legend, Roberto Carlos to go to jail for delaying child support
The Court of Justice in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has ordered the arrest of former Real Madrid left-back Roberto Carlos because of a delay in the payment of three months of alimony for two of his children. The mother of Carlos’ children, Barbara Thurler, had filed a lawsuit that 61,000 real (£15,148) was owed. The 44-year-old Carlos claimed to be in financial difficulties and offered to pay 35,000 real with the rest coming in installments of 2,000 real, but that offer was turned down by the court. The former Brazilian international is currently working for Real Madrid as an ambassador. He cannot be arrested and detained because he does not live in Brazil, unless an international arrest warrant is issued. However, a statement issued on behalf of the former football player said all his legal duties had been fulfilled and he had “made the payment of the alimony related to June on Aug. 3,” adding that the money owed for July has also bee paid.
